Additional Details

first american edition. Perhaps the first overtly antisemitic work published in the United States, issued before the infamous Protocols of Zion. Many Jews had recently arrived in St. Louis in the wake of the 1871 Chicago fire, and a local publisher apparently thought he could profit by drumming up hostility against the newcomers. The author was described in the 2005 introduction to his mother's memoir as "an adventurer who, by all indications, was quite insane" (Malik-Khanam, Thirty Years in the Harem, page vi). His father was an Englishman who had served as court physician to the Turkish sultanate.
